Neuromyelitis optica (NMO, also known as Devic^s disease) is a severe idiopathic immune-mediated demyelinating and necrotizing disease that predominantly involves optic nerves and spinal cord. Cases of NMO have been reported in all continents and races, but ethnic variations suggest that genetic factors are relevant. In Europe, the prevalence of NMO among autoimmune disorders of the central nervous system (CNS) is lower compared with multiple sclerosis (MS).
