A gross external photograph of the brain shows that the left temporal, parietal, and anterior occipital lobes are soft and yellow (arrows, Panel A).
A coronal section of the left cerebral hemisphere shows laminar cortical disruption in the inferior parietal lobule and lateral temporal cortexes (arrows, Panel ).
A low-magnification photomicrograph of the left superior and middle temporal gyri reveals laminated cortical disruption (arrows, Panel C).
Marked neuronal loss, reactive gliosis, and the accumulation of hemosiderin-laden macrophages are seen on higher magnification (inset). Some cerebellar Purkinje cells have marked swelling of the proximal dendrites, the so-called “cactus dendrites” (arrows, Panel D). (Panels C and D, Luxol fast blue– hematoxylin and eosin stain).
